  • Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) 2.0. There are now three levels of requirement
    • Level 1 (Foundational): FAR clause 48 CFR 52.204.21 creaters 15 practices NIST SP 800-171r2 adds for a total of 17
    • Level 2 (Advanced): Aligns with NIST SP 800-171 R2 practices.
    • Level 3 (Expert): Aligns with a subset of NIST SP 800-172 controls, focused on advanced/progressive cybersecurity practices.
  • Even level 1 has become complicated to implement, decreasing from five base parameters to three but increasing the overall takes to 17 requirement areas and a practical maximum of approximately 70 individual assessment objectives within those 17 requirement areas. Not all companies need to comply with each assessment objective.
  • Knowing which objectives must be achieved and which can be MET, labeled out of scope or as enduring exceptions, is necessary for CMMC Subject Matter Experts.

All Department of Defense Contractors and Subcontractors are now subject to the requirements of CMMC. If your company is a vendor to the DIB directly or through a subcontract, also known as the Defense Industrial and Technology Base, you must comply with the CMMC. The DIB is the network of Organizations, facilities, and resources that provides the government with materials, products, and Services for defense purposes.

  • CMMC is a requirement to hold any DoD contract or subcontract. Failure to become CMMC Certified makes your firm ineligible to maintain your contract.
  • In October 2021 the Department of Justice announced the Civil Cyber Security Initiative and specifically included report within the False Claims ACT. So, worse yet are the penalties for self-certification without actual compliance within the mandate, which could include fines and even criminal charges.
